Filming at Liverpool One

Monday, June 11th, 2012

We are currently in the process of creating an audio and video compilation DVD for St Helen’s Concert Band to promote and celebrate their strong historical roots. As part of this project we were also asked to film the band playing a recent live show to represent the members in the present day line up.

The band were asked to play at Liverpool One Proms in the Park over the bank holiday, Jubilee weekend, so we went along to film.

The morning of the concert was glorious; the sun was out, there was a nice cool, slow breeze and the skies were blue -perfect! We got to Chavasse Park a little early to check out the stage and start setting up our equipment.

When we arrived it was already busy with people lounging on the grass and reclining in the special Liverpool One beach chairs. It was a great opportunity to test out our new Jib with remote pan and tilt head. We set this up just to the side of stage, allowing us to pan up and over the band getting some great shots looking down on them and from behind the conductor.

We also used our Canon DSLR and slider to get some establishing and general shots of the crowd and park. The band played for a total of 40 minutes, indulging in some of their favourite songs for the Liverpool crowd.

The entire set was filmed from a variety of angles and we managed to get some great footage!

Overall, it was a great day out! A big thanks to Liverpool One for putting on such a great concert!

Filming at Tranmere Rovers

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

We’ve just finished filming another segment for our client’s promotional video at Tranmere Rovers FC. This was the last game of the season and involved our bestest buddy, Lofty the Polar Bear! This final piece will form part of a campaign to raise awareness of a free loft insulation scheme, in partnership with Wirral council.

After initially setting up outside the main entrance and shop, Lofty begin greeting all the fans as they arrived. It was only a matter of time before Lofty became everyone’s best friend, giving out more ‘high fives’ than I thought humanly (or is it bear-ly?) possible.

Our role was to capture all of this buzz. As the crowds started to grow, we moved through into the stadium to greet the fans inside.  Also in the ground was Tranmere’s own mascot, Rover. We captured Lofty meeting Rover and waving/greeting all the fans in the stands, whilst becoming a bit of a celebrity.

Lofty was busy enjoying being the centre of attention – we filmed all of this buzz whilst helpers, handed out fliers with all the relevant information about the scheme. We rounded the event off with getting everyone in the stands chanting ‘Lofty, Lofty, give us a wave, Lofty, Lofty, give us a wave!’ …Fantastic!

Clothes Show Live 2011

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

By Danny Piercy

We were recently asked to go along to the Clothes Show Live 2011, held at the NEC in Birmingham, to film a set of videos for our client, Beautiful Brows. Our client was there exhibiting their unique make-up product line and required on-location promotional and demonstrational videos.

We had to be at Birmingham before 9AM in order to miss the mohassive crowd whilst filming, this involved getting up at silly O’clock to make sure we were all packed up and on the road on time. The sacrifices we make… oh, and it was a Saturday, A SATURDAY!

The sheer scale of the venue was awesome; there were 100’s of stands from top brands such as Benefit, Superdy, Rimmel and Paul’s Boutique. Once we’d managed to find the Beautiful Brows stand we started to set up our equipment to begin filming.

The first video we were going to shoot was an instructional video to demonstrate how to use the eyebrow make-up. We set up our lighting, audio equipment and microphones and cameras ready to start filming the demonstrator and model. A crowd started to gather as we clearly looked like we were about to film the next Star Wars!

Even with the pressure of the crowd and a few technical problems, we were able to get all the footage we needed and more. We had two cameras filming this as we needed a steady tripod mounted wide shot of the demonstrator and model and also, close up shots of the make-up being applied.

The second video was the promotional video. The brief for this was to show off the stand that Beautiful Brows had set up; and obviously include a few clips of all the other companies that were at the show alongside them.  So we were left to our own devices and went around filming people using the products and trying the make-up on, trying to capture the excitement and hustle and bustle of the whole event.

It was a little awkward at times trying to set the tripod up to get certain shots, due to how busy the event was,, particularly the fashion catwalk shots – around the stage was jammed. It was also a little tricky to get a shot because of the people in front of me too – luckily I had a go-go-gadget-super-extended, well… a tripod. We must have made the models feel a little uneasy, seeing a camera floating above the crowd’s heads 7ft in the air!

Between ignoring texts from my girlfriend demanding I grab as many free samples as I could and trying not to KO people with the tripod, I had to make sure we got the right shots for the promotional video; we had to get across to the viewers, the scale of the place and just how busy it was. In addition to this we captured close-ups of people using the products and their reaction when they first discover that they can have perfect eyebrows quicker than you can say ‘Ireallyshouldn’thavedrankthatredbullat6AM’.

Once we had more than enough footage it was time to jump into the car and get back on the road to head home. As it was the weekend we got back to Liverpool quite quickly, and then spent the rest of the day keeping ourselves busy doing nothing, the video editing can wait till Monday!

Video Production Project

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

editing

The past few weeks have been spent working on a video project for our client, Energy Projects Plus on behalf of Wirral Council. Energy Projects Plus have a campaign at the moment to get homes in the Wirral fully insulated.

We were asked to complete a re-design of their website, produce direct mail pieces, take over their marketing and produce a series of videos that would inform and inspire their target market.

The first thing when it comes to shooting video is to understand what the client wants the video to do; the message it delivers and the emotions it makes the viewers feel. In this case the videos would be emphasising the fact that the scheme was free and that it was quick and easy to complete.

Before starting any filming it needs to be storyboarded; this is vital as you don’t want to be panicking at the last minute to make sure you get the right shots, only to get back to the office to discover you missed something important. After drawing up the storyboards and making sure they included everything we needed, it was time to start the filming.

We used a Sony Z5 HD camera on this shoot. There were a series of four videos that required filming, each showing the different steps involved when getting the free insulation fitted. The videos needed to show just how quick, easy and tidy the whole process was. All of the videos were shot on location, so we had to make sure the conditions were suitable for filming as the majority of it took place outdoors.

There were a few occasions where this obviously didn’t go to plan and in true British style it poured down, putting a stop to any shiny expensive camera equipment being outside. I did contemplate filming the whole thing from the warmth of the car; I didn’t see it as being lazy, but sitting in a very, very big camera dolly. Sorted!

As well as getting videos of the actual installation process we were filming testimonials of customers who have already had their home’s insulated through the Warmer Wirral scheme. We did this by approaching customers that have had the insulation for a few months and asking if they were ok to be filmed. We then asked them to tell us what they thought of the whole insulation process, using Sennheiser wireless mics to record their testimonials, which would be used in the final video.

Once all four videos were filmed it was time to get the narration down, so we headed over to the Energy Project Plus main office to record the script that would be laid over the video. We worked with the client to make sure the script was exactly what they were after and that it delivered all the right messages – backed up the visuals being presented in the video.

After the script was recorded it was time to head back to the nerd cave to begin editing everything together, creating motion graphics intros and title screens and adding background music. A few days later, voila! The videos were ready to be embedded into the new Warmer Wirral website (which I may point out, was also designed by your favourite media creatives here at Studiowide).  You’ll be able to watch the videos and check out our handy work in the next few days when the website goes live over at; www.warmerwirral.org.uk
